Longhair Dachshund Puppies

Raising our Little Stars

…With loads and loads of love!

For the first week or two, mom and her precious newborn babies stay in our room where we can keep a close eye on them.  As soon as we feel comfortable leaving mom alone with her puppies, they are moved to the nursery which is a nice, quiet room inside our house.  Moms are fed a special cooked diet consisting of chicken, pumpkin / butternut, rice and plain yoghurt.  As soon as puppies start wiggling around, eating and playing, they are moved to the second puppy area which is just outside our kitchen.  Here they have a heated (for the winter) little house and a 8 x 2 m artificial grass area where the potty training starts.  We follow a very strict hygiene routine where all the pup’s bedding get washed on a daily basis.  (3 washing machines running all day long).  The artificial  grass are removed early morning hours, after which the floor get washed and sanitised with F10.  A clean piece of grass that has been washed the previous day, are put down.   The dirty artificial grass is taken to the wash bay where it is washed and also sterilised.  Unfortunately we don’t allow anyone in the sterilised areas … not because we have something to hide, but to protect our fragile pups from germs.

And then of course the best part of the day… lying with the pups on their clean bedding… exchanging lots of  kisses and cuddles.

Pups are raised on the same cooked diet that the moms are fed.

Puppies can leave us after 8 weeks when they are properly weaned from mommy.

Mini Longhair Dachshund Prices

The prices of our puppies depend on the colour and gender of the puppy.  Some colours are rare and not so easy to breed, so these pups are more expensive. Prices average from R14 000 – R25 000.

WHY THE HECTIC PRICE?

Because you pay for what you get!   Starting to breed Longhair Dachshunds are not an easy task.  It took me many years, tears and heartbreak to breed our own Hadeshua Stars bloodlines that is clear from genetic health issues and disabilities.   I don’t think anyone understands the amount of research, understanding and learning on a daily basis about this amazing breed… about colour genetics and how each colour gene can have a positive or negative effect on a dog’s health.  Most backyard breeders (those who breed only for an extra income or “just for the love”) don’t have a clue of the amount of health issues that is hidden in the DNA. They just don’t care… as long as the monies are good.  Most of them don’t even know what the PRA status of their dogs are… and I don’t even want to mention puppy mills where the pups are not socialised at all; they don’t know what it feel like having nice and clean bedding.  They don’t have room for exploring and they have to survive in their own poop.

There are very few people who are really acquainted with the science behind breeding. It’s not about picking a male and female that would probably  produce nice pups.  Breeding beautiful puppies with health being the main aim, took me many years to achieve.  The good looks of our puppies are purely a blessing from above. Health and colour genetics, the overall health of our dogs and puppies, plays the biggest role in our breeding program.  Only the best can become a Hadeshua Stars breeding dog. We will never breed a dog with any health issues or disabilities.

Each breed has it’s own unique genetic makeup, so each breed has it’s own health screening panel.  The most important health test for Longhair Dachshunds is the PRA status of their eyes.  There are not as many Longhair Dachshunds with PRA CLEAR status and the public is not aware of this major issue.  A PRA affected dog will be born blind or he / she will become blind in only a few years time.  All our breeding dog’s PRA status has been genetically tested to make sure we will never breed PRA AFFECTED puppies.  All our pups are guaranteed to never go blind.

Then there is Pes Varus – Bow-leggedness – it is a condition where a dog’s legs, particularly the hind legs, curve outward, giving a bow-legged dachshund appearance. This structural anomaly can be due to a variety of reasons, including genetic predispositions and nutritional deficiencies. The architecture of their short and stout legs can predispose them to leg deformities. This genetic inclination means that Pes Varus is often inherited. Traumatic injuries to the legs, particularly during the formative puppy years, can lead to bow-leggedness.  A fracture that heals incorrectly or an injury to the growth plate can alter the natural growth pattern of the leg bones, leading to a bow-legged stance.  It causes the hind legs to bow outwards, and while it may seem merely cosmetic, it can lead to more serious health issues.  Unfortunately there is no DNA test for this problem so these genes are hidden somewhere in the bloodlines.  When I started breeding Longhair Dachshunds, it was a major issue to get rid of it, as not all breeders are honest about this problem.  I had to struggle and find out for myself in which bloodlines the gene is hidden.  All those bloodlines had to be eliminated and the result was re-homing a lot of my breeding dogs which was heartbreaking for me.  Eventually, with time, I could breed my own lines which are not predisposed to Pes Varus, but the problem still can affect 1 out of 100 Hadeshua Stars Puppies.  NO breeders can guarantee you that your pup will not develop Pes Varus.  I can honestly say that in the last year, we only had one case where a pup’s hind legs developed into bow-leggedness.  Luckily it was / is not as bad that the pup needs any surgery.

I believe that the way the mother is treated during her pregnancy, plays a significant role in the development of her babies. A pregnant mom has to be loved, kept calm and be fed only the best.

You will receive a puppy that is well socialised, loved and adored from the day he / she is born. Our puppies do have very unique, loving temperaments and I believe it is because they are loved to the moon and back.

Puppies will be vaccinated up to date, dewormed on a regular base, treated with Advocate, microchipped with Getmeknown and KUSA / CANINE SA registered. All our puppies will be sold with a sales contract and strict breeding restrictions.  Puppy leave us with a Puppy Pack containing his blanket, toy, treats and food. His vaccination card together with his microchip certificate and KUSA/CANINE SA certificate will also accomodate puppy

Puppy Transport

Puppies will be transported and delivered by Hadeshua Transport Solutions, owned and handled by my husband, Inus. No other pet transport company will be used in order to protect our puppies and keep them safe from any harm.  Inus will quote you for delivery himself and you can be rest assured that your puppy will be delivered to you safe and sound.  Some of our puppies fly with Pet Lounge to their destination which will also be arranged by Inus & myself.  Many people ask if it is safe to fly a puppy… Flying in an airplane is just as safe as traveling in a car and possibly less stressful than a long car ride. A lot of people think animals are drugged, put in a box, tossed around with the rest of the baggage or left in hot planes for hours, etc. If this was true, then we would never fly our puppies!! Your puppy will not be stacked on top of suitcases. Certain airlines have a special cabin, especially designed for pets.  They will be protected from cargo and luggage. It is temperature-controlled and pressurised exactly like the cabins. Puppies are never drugged!
